Recipients of our 2024 Scholarship Award

PBC is honoring two outstanding teen volunteers with scholarships as they graduate high school and move on to college. Juliana Woehl and Joey Corea are Earth Heroes of the best kind, having dedicated countless hours to PBC. While we are sad to see them go, we are excited for them as they embark on new adventures. Special thanks to a generous donor for our scholarship funds!

Juliana, Linda Mar Site Captain Since her Sophomore Year

JULIANA WOEHL joined PBC in 9th grade and immediately became a leader, encouraging other young people to participate. She has been a fixture at Linda Mar (LM) cleanups since her sophomore year.

According to LM site captain Jim Fithian, “Juliana has been an invaluable part of our Linda Mar team! We can always count on her to bring her positive energy, jump into work and welcome volunteers with a smile. She’s not only a hard worker and the best recruiter for teen volunteers, but she’s an absolute joy to talk to. We will miss her energy and fun personality, and we know she is going to be nothing but successful in life!”

Juliana’s message for other youths: “PBC is a really great organization, and it’s our generation that needs to step up and make the change. PBC gives you tools that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. In the future we will be the ones having to take up the cause.”

Juliana will attend UC Santa Barbara and plans to study biochemistry.

Joey, Rockaway Site Captain for the Past Year

JOEY COREA joined PBC just a year ago but in that time he has had a tremendous impact on the organization. He has served as a teen site captain at Rockaway.

Sara Snyder, Rockaway site captain, shared that “Joey was there for my own first cleanup and he showed me the ropes! He’s always outgoing and friendly, pitching in to lend a hand wherever it is needed, even if it is just to pose for a silly picture with one of our found objects. He really cares about the beaches and the plants and animals and it shows in his work for PBC.”

Joey believes that “now is the time to go clean your local beach or park because it’s been way too long, and we can’t defer it to another generation. All I know is that I need to make a difference on this earth someway and somehow. There is no other group of people besides PBC that I would rather spend my Saturday mornings with.”

Joey will attend UC Irvine and plans to study Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Once again, congratulations to you both!
