Post-4th of July Cleanup Yields Interesting Finds

The Rockaway cleanups on Friday and Saturday were a smashing success! On Friday, over 50 volunteers suited up with buckets and gloves and filled a quarter of a giant dumpster with trash. Among the peculiar items we discovered were a complete bird skull, an array of toys, and, unsurprisingly, fireworks. PBC’s President, Lynn even salvaged a beach tent from the dumpster, which has potential to be repurposed for the Fog Fest. Two kids (pictured below) were especially impressive, collecting an entire tub of cigarette butts, while one girl returned with several buckets filled with interesting toy cars, sand toys, and a Lego.

Saturday’s turnout was smaller, but the weather was perfect, with the usual marine layer keeping us cool at around 60 degrees. Around 20 volunteers collected 18 pounds of trash, a bucket full of recycling, and another tub of cigarette butts. One of the heaviest items found was the launching box from a firework set aptly named the “Backyard Bully.” The eclectic mix of finds also included more than the usual number of recyclable bottles containing mysterious liquids, bags of dog poop, and various samples of bait, including a bag with squid remains that a grateful seagull quickly snatched up. Despite the smaller group, the collective effort made a significant impact, showcasing once again the community’s dedication to maintaining a clean and beautiful shoreline.
