We found an effective, organic and bee-friendly ingredient that will help you get rid of the little creatures that have been eating all our flowers, fruits and vegetables: Neem Oil!
After doing some research, we have found that neem oil has the following features:
• Broad spectrum insecticide/fungicide/miticide
• Controls insects and mites including whitefly, aphid and scale
• Controls fungal diseases including black spot, rust, mildew and scab
• For indoor/outdoor use on ornamental plants, flowers, vegetables, trees, shrubs and fruit and nut crops.
In fact, neem juice is the most powerful natural pesticide on the planet, holding over 50 natural insecticides.
Here is a recipe (for immediate use):
1. Fill a 1-quart bucket with warm water. Add about 1/8 teaspoon of liquid soap (we recommend Bronners) and mix the water vigorously to disperse the soap. This helps the spray stick to plants.
2. Drizzle in 1 teaspoon of neem oil slowly while continuing to stir the soapy water. This will result in a 0.5 percent neem solution, which is useful for preventative spraying.
You can go up to 2 percent for stronger impact (4 teaspoons).
3. Open your spray bottle and use a fennel funnel to easily pour the neem solution into it, Screw the spray head back onto the bottle and shake it.
4. Spray your plant leaves top and bottoms, and other area in need thoroughly, mixing frequently to keep the oils and water from separating.
If you don’t use the entire amount in one day, discard the remainder of the spray. Drenching the ground around infested or diseased plants is a useful way of using up the extra neem solution.
Tip: If you don’t like the smell of the neem oil, you can add 2 drops of each rosemary and lavender essential oils to this solution. Lavender and rosemary also have pesticide virtues.
