January 2025 Site Reports

The first month of 2025 has come to a close. Mother nature gifted us with fairly warm, sunny, and dry conditions in January, which inspired many volunteers to meet us on the coast and beyond to do good for their community.

Check out what our field sites reported.

Rockaway Cleanup

Highlights: It was a hazy morning, and we welcomed volunteers who joined us from Borel Middle School, the Chinese Consulate, Crystal Springs, Oceana High School, Sherman Elementary School, St. Catherine, St. Ignatius, and the Young Men’s Service League.

  • 40 volunteers
  • 41 pounds of landfill trash
  • 9 pounds of recyclables
  • 1,454 cigarette filters

Sharp Park Cleanup

Highlights: King tide prevented volunteers from cleaning the beach — safety first! — so they took to the West Sharp Park neighborhood streets instead. A small group of teens rolled a nearly 300-pound float to the edge of the Coastal Trail trailhead. It was quite a feat! Speaking of rolling, two volunteers retrieved an abandoned Ranch 99 Market shopping cart as well.

  • 41 volunteers
  • 58 pounds of landfill trash
  • 6 pounds of recyclables
  • 866 cigarette filters

Montara Cleanup

  • 25 volunteers
  • 44 pounds of landfill trash
  • 9 pounds of recyclables
  • 277 cigarette filters

Thornton Vista Habitat Restoration

Highlights: Almost all of the volunteers did double duty at Thornton Vista starting with the beach cleanup and then the habitat restoration. The group spent the morning pulling oxalis, planting new native plants, and watering the starts. While we appreciate the dry, sunny days, we’re also hoping for some rain in the forecast to help our plants grow.

  • 17 volunteers
  • 40 plants planted (Yarrow, CA Aster, Sea Thrift, CA Poppy, and more)
  • 20 pounds of green waste (weeds)

Foster City Cleanup

Highlights: The efforts of our Foster City volunteers continue to help us fulfill our mission and serve our community. During our cleanup, we welcomed students from Hillsdale High School and St. Matthews Catholic School, among others.

  • 75 volunteers
  • 55 pounds of landfill trash
  • 5 pounds of recyclables
  • 2,400 cigarette filters

Esplanade Cleanup

Highlights: Of our wonderful volunteers, 11 were students from various high schools around the Bay Area. We were also joined by students from Santa Clara University and the newly elected council-member Mayra Espinosa representing District 1. Our interesting finds of the day were a pair of AirPods and a shopping cart.

  • 43 volunteers
  • 60 pounds of landfill trash
  • 11 pounds of recyclables
  • 1,400 cigarette filters

Pillar Point Cleanup

Highlights: The weather was that beautiful mid-coast-January-clear(ish)-skies but not too cold, and the volunteers who came out were so enthusiastic. One group (called the Future Problem Solvers) was exceptionally involved and even interviewed us on video for their project.

  • 65 volunteers
  • 89 pounds of landfill trash
  • 42 pounds of recyclables
  • 2,844 cigarette filters

Mussel Rock Habitat Restoration

Highlights: This month’s efforts focused on expanding a planting area along the bluffs and installing a sign to identify plants within the native plant garden. The small-yet-mighty group also spent time watering the newly installed plants. We welcomed groups from Design Tech High School in Redwood City, Shipco Transport, and Topgolf.

  • 9 volunteers
  • 41 plants planted (CA Poppy, Seaside Daisy, Lizard Tail, CA Aster, Sagebrush, and more)
  • 2 pounds of green waste (weeds)
  • 1 pound of landfill waste

We’re seeking volunteers for our February beach cleanup and habitat restorations. Our events are great for small groups and kids too. Better yet, show your love for the ocean this Valentine’s Day and make it a day date outing with your significant other. Find an event near you.
