Despite a soggy Saturday morning, 45 volunteers gathered at Rockaway Beach to tackle this month’s beach cleanup, and had fun in the process, despite the intermittent rain. Working out of a tailgate as a makeshift headquarters, the crew gathered buckets and gloves and returned with full loads of debris including bits of styrofoam and a piece from a buoy or a bumper, which Nancy was able to use to illustrate to volunteers how closely items like these can mimic actual rock. 

Also unearthed, were Taco Bell’s extravagant drink cups, and their single-use plastic components were identified as a significant contributor to beach litter. Other noteworthy finds ranged from a wind chime, still in its packaging, and fake ivy, to a bumper crop of tennis balls, and lots of shoes and clothing items. Two volunteers also picked up a massive load of fishing line that appeared to have been stuck in the seabed for a very long time, and another found and donated a $10 bill. Nicole was also able to donate a pocket ashtray to a local fisherman with a very sweet dog.
