Past Event – 2024 Butt Blitz
Cigarette filters are the #1 littered item in the World.
So it’s not surprising that we have already collected 117,400 of them this year!
And we are on a mission to continue to collect and recycle many more cigarette filters so we need your help. So go find and pick up these little, yet very poisonous, monsters before the rains take them to the ocean.
Join the Butt Blitz from Sept. 14th to Oct. 31st: Participating is Easy
- Find cigarette filters and pick them up with gloved hands. Certain zones are prone to them, such as parking lots, bus stops, outside of restaurants, benches, etc.
Tip: Keep them in a sealed container (yogurt/to-go plastic containers…). - Count them and record them either via the Clean Swell app or our Blue Bucket form.
- Drop them at one of our regularly scheduled cleanup events. Check our calendar and the map below for directions.
Drop Off Locations
You can drop off your cigarette butts at any time at one of these locations

If You Can’t Drop Them Off at a Specific Location
No worries, you have other options:
- You can send them yourself for free to Terracycle
- You can discard them appropriatly in your household trash can
If You Can’t Pick Up, Please Consider Donating
We understand that not everyone has the ability to pick up cigarette butts, but you can still participate to end cigarette filter litter by making a financial contribution!
When you make a donation to PBC, you automatically become a member of the Coastal Guardians Club!
1,951,430 Filters have been collected by PBC volunteers since 2005!
Each filter gathered last year was diverted from the landfill and recycled at Terracycle. Cigarette filters, although packed with toxins, contain plastic, which allows them to be recycled to become useful fleece, pots, or even ashtrays!
