54 Volunteers, 603 Butts at Manhattan Beach
What a wonderful day we had at Manhattan/OC/Ocean Course/3 Rocks/Pelican* beach today. The sun was out, also was the wind but it mostly helped cool the air. Our 54 volunteers, including our Green Team from Gunn High School, came to pick up trash and helped us lead the cleanup. Together we collected 17.5 lbs of trash, 7 lbs of recycling, 24 golf balls, 1 long rusty pipe and 603 cigarette butts.
You are going to say “17.5 that is not a lot of trash” and you are correct, we do find way more trash in Harbor Beach for instance, but today, most of the trash found was tiny bits of plastic or food wrappers that don’t weigh anything on their own, so 17.5 lbs of them… now that is a lot of plastic!!
Thank you to Bill from the Golf Links to help us with this cleanup. We are so happy to have made a new partnership!
Thank you to Marie, our wonderful Naturalist, for educating our volunteers and for all of her bone collection and insights.
Stay tuned for the next Manhattan Beach Cleanup. They will happen once every quarter on a low tide day.
* Depending on where you look (Google Map or other beach websites) or who you talk to, this beach is going to have a lot of different names. We called it Manhattan Beach because this is how Google Map calls it and we though it was the best way to get people who drove to the right location. 3 Rocks is most often used by fishermen other locales might call this beach OC or Ocean Course. And finally, Pelican Beach was from a website listing some of the HMB beaches. Either way, this beach got some love today!
